Jewellery Care
Lelya jewellery is designed to be worn and enjoyed for many years. Fine jewellery is, however, made from precious metals and small precision-set stones and should be treated with appropriate care.
Rings in particular are exposed to more knocks, pressure and contact than most other jewellery.
Regular everyday wear is absolutely fine, but we do not recommend wearing fine jewellery continuously during every activity.
Protecting your jewellery from damage
We recommend removing your jewellery before:
- sleeping;
- exercising or playing sport;
- heavy lifting;
- gardening;
- DIY or manual work;
- housework or cleaning;
- swimming;
- showering; or
- applying beauty products or using chemicals.
Pressure or impact can bend a ring or move very small prongs without necessarily leaving obvious external damage.
Snagging on clothing, gloves, bedding or other materials can also place pressure on exposed stone settings.
Check your stones and settings
Take a moment every so often to look at your ring closely.
If a stone moves, rattles or appears to have changed position, or if a prong begins catching when it did not previously, stop wearing the jewellery and contact us.
Do not wait until a stone is lost.
We recommend periodic professional inspection of stone settings, particularly on engagement rings worn regularly and designs incorporating very fine or exposed settings.
Cleaning your jewellery at home
For most diamond and sapphire jewellery, gentle cleaning at home is all that is required.
Use warm water with a small amount of mild washing-up liquid and gently clean the jewellery with a very soft toothbrush.
Rinse carefully in a bowl of clean water and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Avoid abrasive cleaners, toothpaste, bleach and harsh household chemicals.
If you suspect that any stone may be loose, do not clean or continue wearing the jewellery. Contact us first.
Ultrasonic and steam cleaning
We do not recommend using a home ultrasonic or steam cleaner on your Lelya jewellery.
Ultrasonic vibration can aggravate an already compromised setting and is not suitable for every gemstone or treatment.
Professional jewellers inspect jewellery before deciding whether ultrasonic or steam cleaning is appropriate for a particular piece.
Professional maintenance
Fine jewellery can require maintenance during its lifetime.
Prongs and settings may gradually wear through use and should be inspected periodically. Detecting movement or wear early is much safer and usually much simpler to address than replacing a stone after it has been lost.
